Come find some time with your family or school group at the
Garfield Park Conservatory by joining in on our time-traveling
pursuit. Do you know which plant at the Conservatory holds the
record for being the oldest? Ever glimpsed the 100 year old
waterfall whose design was inspired by a simple piano tune?
During this self-guided scavenger hunt, we’ll let you in on
exciting historical secrets, introduce you to centennial
celebrities, both plant and mineral, and generally show you a
good (literally) old time. In this fun self-guided hunt
(available free to all visitors), families, kids,
students, and teachers work together using educational hints and
photo details to find time in the Garfield Park Conservatory.

We have found a good way to engage school groups in the
excitement of self-guided plant pursuits is to highlight some
special stars of our collections. Below you will find four
different themes of exploration for your choosing. Reserve
one pack or all four for the day of your visit. (We can send you
a digital pdf of these hunts before your visit, so you can talk
with your students about what they will be seeing before they
arrive!) Just let us know what works for you. (The hunts, though
appropriate for multiple age ranges, do require reading skills.
For non-readers, chaperones are encouraged to guide students,
using pictures provided.)
“Touch A Plant” Sensory Themed Scavenger Hunt
(Self-Guided)– Pack of 30
We’ve picked
out some plants at the conservatory that are especially fun to
touch. Some of our plants are soft, some are furry, and brace
yourself, some even move! (We do not allow all plants at our
Conservatory to be touched, so this is a good way to experience
the ones that like a gentle one-finger pat every once in
awhile.)
“African Plant Tour” Geography and Cultural Themed
Scavenger Hunt
(Self-Guided)– Pack of 30
The African Continent is the original home to many of the
tropical plants at the Conservatory. Africa is also the home to
some plants, like the chocolate tree, that though they didn’t
originate in Africa, they
currently grow their now. Come visit some plants with African
connections, and reinforce cultural and geographic themes.
“Dinosaur Dinner” Fern Room Scavenger Hunt
(Self-Guided)– Pack of 30
The Fern Room at the Conservatory was originally designed by the
landscape architect Jens Jensen to resemble a long ago
pre-historic Illinois. The kinds of
plants you see in this room are the type that would have fed a
dinosaur, many many years ago. Come sneak around this lush
room, find some dinosaur snacks, and listen for a brachiosaurus!
“Conservatory Candy Land” Sweet -Themed Scavenger Hunt
(Self-Guided)– Pack of 30
If your students ever doubted that candy grows
on trees, this is the hunt for them. A hunt highlighting the
fruiting plants of the conservatory, such as pineapples,
bananas, chocolate, and much more, is a fabulous connection to
the newest permanent exhibit of the Conservatory, Sugar from the
