Join us for a special week this October to participate in a city-wide festival that brings people together through informal art-making. We’ll be exploring symmetry in tropical leaves, creating communal plant drawings and using plant parts to decorate homemade sketchpads. Big Draw Schedule for Garfield Park Conservatory:

Monday, October 7, 10:00 am - Noon

Leafy Symmetry (ages 5 and under with caregivers): Children will learn about the concept of SYMMETRY as it applies to tropical leaves, focusing specially on Calathea plants which can be found throughout the Conservatory. Children will create their own symmetrical design and leaf to bring home with them.

Wednesday, October 9, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Exquisite Plant Parts (all ages): In this take on an old favorite, children will contribute to a communal growing plant-scape by connecting their own plant drawings to others’ drawings. Children will learn about the different parts of plants as they layer their sketches above, below, beside or even on top of existing plant drawings.

Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Plant Pound Sketch Pads (all ages): Get the jumpstart you need on sketching the beautiful plants and flowers of the Conservatory. Children will create their own sketchpads out of cloth, cardboard, paper, and pigments from flowers found right here at the Conservatory. Then, use your sketchpad to draw plants around the Conservatory. Caution to parents, we will be using kid-sized hammers in this activity!

Easel-In (all ages): Bring your creativity, an artistic eye and “easel-in” to the Sugar From the Sun Room at the Conservatory. We will set up empty easels with blank paper and pencils for participants to stop and draw inspiration from our living collection
